The overall winner of the MTN mPulse Spelling Bee Competition for 2022 is 14-year-old Kate Ene David.

After accurately spelling the word "acquiesce" in the final round, Kate, a student from Intimacy With Christ International School in Mararaba, Nasarawa State, was declared the winner.

The 14-year-old winner will consequently take over as CEO of MTN Nigeria for a day, managing the communications network.

Platform for educational development: MTN Nigeria's chief marketing officer, Adia Sowho, congratulated the top 20 competitors who defeated more than 11,000 other contestants to compete in the spelling bee finals, saying that the initiative provided a platform for them to grow and realize their full potential.

“Promoting digital education is one way in which we can encourage people to embrace the digital space and enjoy the benefits and convenience that come with it. This is why MTN mPulse continues to engage with young people through the website, which has a vast variety of educational content, enabling them to learn, play and shine,” she said.

The chief human resource officer, MTN Nigeria, Esther Akinnukawe commended the finalists for making it to the finals.

“Congratulations to Kate for emerging the champion. I want to thank and commend every participant for showing up. Showing up is a winning quality, and I admire your courage in standing in front of the audience to represent yourself, your parent, and your school. We are thrilled to have such a large turnout, and we are more confident to carry on this educative initiative,” she said.

Benefits: Kate received a N2.5 million scholarship grant, a laptop, a smartphone, and an MTN goody bag in addition to a day as the CEO of MTN Nigeria. MTN will also provide the winning English teacher a N350,000 grant and cutting-edge ICT equipment for their school, respectively.

Kate, who was beaming with joy and shared her excitement, said,

“I am very excited and grateful to God for giving me the opportunity. The journey has never been easy but I studied a lot.”

When asked what to expect from her as MTN CEO for a day, she said,

“I think I will be more excited to learn about the position on that day.”

Along with Kate, the first, second, and third runners-up, Agbo Divine Capable from Intimacy with Christ International School in Nasarawa State, Okechukwu Rejoice from Glorious Covenant School in Rivers State, Daniel Ann, a student there, and other finalists received prizes totaling more than N5.7 million in addition to a ton of goody bags.
